NBR ISO 9001:2008
Santa Cruz has implemented and kept the Total Quality Program since 1993. When the integration among the several areas was intensified, the processes started being controlled with an even stronger rigor and improvements could then be gradually achieved.
In October 1997 its Business Process Management received from the Fundação Vanzolini its First Certificate of Quality Warrant based on the requirements of NBR ISO 9002 norm for sugar and alcohol. In July 2000 the company conquered its second certificate representing Agro Pecuária Boa Vista contemplating this time the process of production and supplying of the sugar cane.
In the year 2001 it was time for the dried yeast production and electric energy be certified.
With the development of the quality system the processes were given a broader control and the information had more credibility of the management actions, always reaching for the administrative excellence.
In September 2002 Santa Cruz recertified its Quality Management System for its agricultural and industrial processes based on the requirements of the new NBR ISO 9001:2008 which also certified the co -companies Santa Cruz S/A. Sugar and Alcohol and Agro Pecuária Boa Vista S/A. In the same occasion it received the Certificate for Environmental Management System introduced to the two companies in compliance to the requirements of NBR ISO 14001/96, which intends to minimize the environmental impacts of the productive activity.
The constant improvement from Santa Cruz´s Managing System allowed in November 2004 the Management System APPCC, according to the compliance to the NBR 14900 that aims the assurance of a proper conduction of the sugar manufacture without any contaminations that may harm the consumer’s health. This Feeding Security System consists on the analysis of the harming situations that may be present in the process and analyze the results in scheduled evaluations.
NBR ISO 9001;

NBR ISO 14001
Santa Cruz is the first sugar and ethanol company to obtain the ISO 14001 certification in Brazil.
Santa Cruz was certified in the normatization ISO 14001 and became the first producer of alcohol and sugar to obtain a certificate that encloses all its industrial and agriculture processes. The Environmental Management System to comply with the requirements of ISO 14001 was audited by the Carlos Alberto Vanzolini Foundation and attests that the company complies with the environmental legislation and that it is concerned about the environment where it develops its activities.
The challenge of acquiring the ISO 14001 certification was first proposed by the CEO Luiz Antonio Cera Ometto when the agricultural area was certified at the ISO 9002 in 2000 and ever since a series of procedures was implemented to adequate the enterprise to the requirements of the normatization. Up to the certification about R$ 1,700,000.00 were invested in equipment, construction and personal training aiming to make all the processes the least offensive to the environment as possible and with plans for preventing environmental accidents and a broad awareness activity of its suppliers, co-workers and customers.
Many of these actions were on the local press. After a very broad and thorough approach to the environmental aspects, all the procedures were documented and the operational and administrative were revised, what allowed a firmer observation of the terms of non-aggression to the environment behavior of the employees and maximize the reduction of the possible aggressions to the environment. In the agricultural aspect the company has developed a reforestation project for three years on about 1,700 hectares of the manancials, point were the rivers are born and preservation of the forests.
In the industry the efforts were focused on the control of residues elimination and the prevention of emergencies. Many contention bays were built to avoid water and soil contamination. The emergency brigade became a reality and remains very active thanks to constant simulation of accidents. The chimneys were equipped with burnt residue retentors that wash the combustion gases and withdraw the particulated material. If the resource was not applied, all the pollution would be thrown in the atmosphere. A new sewage line was built and linked to a treatment station (ETE) and there all the residues produced are treated. An oil floater, which collects all traces of oil from the residual water was also installed. It is another barrier from preventing the pollution to reach the environment. This water is not returned to the natural water but used in the fertirrigation of the plantations and it also helps reduce the consumption of water.
Sewage treatment stations were also being implemented on the farmhouses where there were housing colonies. This is a first concerning the rural area and the many cities and towns that have no sewage treatment. To assure the quality of the underground water monitoring wells were built for the collection and analysis of the water according to the environmental legislation.
The servicing and refueling station for the maintenance of the fleet was totally remodeled according to the normatizations of the engineering division of CETESB and is in total compliance to the normatizations against leakages. A small and advanced station was also built to comply with all the requirements, what intends to accelerate the supply of the needs in the transporting process. Selective collection of garbage is also done here. Twelve sets of specific cans and 120 containers with a total volume of 200 liters were adapted for the collection and separation of the detricts, which are sent to a specialized company.
Santa Cruz produces 1.6 tons of paper each month, 70 tons of iron and many other residues that are appropriately disposed of. And for the success of the project all of our co-workers were made aware of how important it is to preserve the environment from specific trainings that all put together sum about 3,000 hours total.
Our intention is to keep the environmental conscience from the employees not only in mandatory occasions such as the way of obtaining a certification but also on a daily basis, on the development of the activities performed either inside the company or outside it.
